On the recent Revo study tour to Tokyo and Seoul, we saw some amazing department stores, which put many UK operators to shame. Brands such as Shinsegae, Isetan and Hyundai redefine luxury retailing with a mixture of high end concessions, sensational interiors, unrivalled levels of service and a catering / dining mix that compliments the retail offer. The blurring of lines between mall and store environment was inspirational. Whether it be a Versace handbag or a gift-wrapped melon, there is much that UK operators could learn.
